The sunflowers grew to twice my height this year. After a while we stopped counting because it seemed like they'd never quit. They pointed toward the house, swaying drunkenly with all the confidence of a man who's had three whiskeys, a man who's never been told no. Yesterday we cut them down. Chopped the stalks and planted them in different coloured vases, delivering them to different rooms, different neighbours.
This morning, I carried the vase from my bedroom and placed it on a table in the garden. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry. I didn't realise it would hurt this much.
